POHOIKI HAWAII; TERRY ANDRADE (KEAUKAHA CC) MANAGED TO RIDE WHAT LITTLE BREEZE AND SWELL THE NOTORIOUSLY WINDY PUNA COASTLINE HAD TO OFFER, WINING THE 40-49 MEN’S OC-1 DIVISION OF THE “POHOIKI CHALLENGE”. T.A. FINISHED AT KEHENA COMPLETEING THE 12 MILE “LONG COURSE” WITH A TIME OF 1:28. TWENTY THREE ENTRIES RAN THE LONG COURSE AND 39 ENTRIES COMPETED IN THE 8 MILE SHORT COURSE. THE CONDITIONS WERE UNUSUALLY CALM FOR THE OFTEN TREACHEROUS PUNA COASTLINE. THIS STRETCH OF JAGGED LAVA CLIFFS IS EXPOSED TO THE STIFF TRADEWINDS AND OCEAN SWELLS. ALL THE DIVISIONS LINED UP OUTSIDE THE POHOIKI BOAT LAUNCH FOR THE10AM START. LONG COURSE STARTED FIRST HEADING NORTH BEFORE TURNING ON THE OFFICAL BOAT. SHORT COURSE WENT SHORTLY AFTER HEADING SOUTH DIRECTLY TO THE FINISH AT KEHENA BEACH. THE LOCAL NATIVES, IN THE BUFF, GREETED THE CANOES LANDING ON THE BLACK SAND BEACH. ALWAYS AN ADVENTURE, THE CLASSIC RACE ENDS WITH A CHAIN OF PADDLERS HOISTING THE 20 FT. BOATS UP THE STEEP SWITCHBACK TRAIL. DOWN THE ROAD AT KAIMU EVERYONE GATHERED FOR GREAT FOOD, COLD BEER, AND JELLO SHOOTERS, WHILE THE WINNERS WERE ANNONCED..
MEDALING IN THE “SHORT COURSE” FOR KEAUKAHA WAS MAYA BAYLAC WITH A FIRST IN THE 60+ WOMEN, RON REILLY WITH A 3RD IN THE MEN’S 60+, AND GLEN BOUSQUE WITH 4RTH IN THE MEN’S 50-59. OF NOTE WAS ROOKIE NORB FURUMO, FROM KEAUKAHA FINISHING 4RTH IN THE NOVICE MEN OC-1 SHORT COURSE. AFA AND BEV TUAOLO OF PUNA CC HOSTED THEIR ANNUAL CANOE RACE WELCOMING PADDLERS FROM WEST AND EAST HAWAII. THE HIPA EVENT WAS AGAIN RUN SMOOTHLY AND SAFELY UNDER THE CARE OF RANDY BOTTI AND CREW. CONGRADULATIONS TO ALL THE PADDLERS, PUNA CC, AND H.I.P.A. FOR ANOTHER GREAT DAY IN THE WATER.
